Red Code + Natural Gut
I usually go full red code and I love the string but I'd like to add a little control. I usually string it between 55 and 57. Was wondering if anyone has done a natural gut red code hybrid, with either the gut or the red code in the mains. Any recommendations for tension?

Gut mains with redcode crosses will play nothing like redcode mains. It'll feel like gut with crisp crosses.
Redcode mains with gut crosses will yield a bed that feels like redcode but has more control and a bit better volley. The problem is something like OGSM in the crosses will feel 95% as good at a fraction of the cost :P Save the gut for the mains :) |
I gave Red Code a try a while ago, when I was testing different crosses w/ my gut mains. While I liked it, personally I could not tell much of a difference between it and other cheaper polys. Sure, as a full bed there might be a difference, but in the setup I was using, nothing noticeable.
However, that wasn't your question... If you are looking for more control, you probably won't notice it w/ gut mains. That setup will get more power, more feel and *maybe* a little less control, but not more. As others have stated here, putting gut in the cross is a waste of money, and you can probably get very similar results with a good multi. Having said that, I highly recommend giving gut mains a try. Stick with your normal tension for the Red Code crosses and bump the gut up 2-3 lbs from that. |
Great thanks for the advice I'm very new to natural gut haven't used it in a long long time

I also misspoke, I'm not looking for more control, I'm looking for more touch (if those are distinguishable)

More touch? gut mains are for you. You can actually keep increasing the tension on the gut higher and higher to tame the power if needed. There is nothing wrong with stringing the gut at 60 if you need to to tame the power.
