starting clamp or flying clamp
I have a spare floating clamp and my machine has fixed clamps. Can I use the floating clamp as a starting clamp or is there something special about a starting clamp. I have never used one

When I got my machine with the standard set of tools, the first additional tool I bought was a starting clamp. The next tool I bought was a floating clamp. I never use my starting clamp anymore. I prefer to use the floating clamp when I need an extra clamp. It's easier on the strings, and you don't always have to do an extra pull when you take it out. It's also easier to use as a bridge when you don't have much string left to pull. You can't use it to tie knots, but I prefer to use needlenose pliers anyway.

Starting clamps are not an absolute necessity but they are very handy tools IMHO. I don't you will find one at Home Depot or anything close to it.
