Calling all FED fans, Whats feds top 5 most painful loses?

Other contenders was obviously this year vs djoker in the WTF or nalbandian in madrid and paris, is there any others I might be missing. I think the nadal loss in 08 RG was the most brutal of all.

edmondsm 12-04-2012 12:07 AM

Replace 1,2,3, and 5 with other FO finals and throw in that Aussie final against Nadal. That one sucked. Probably because I had stayed up until god knows how late to see it.

Edit: I am not a dyed-in-the-wool Fed fan. Most of those loses were painful because Nadal was the one winning. Nalbandian is my all time favorite player so that match was just pure win.

Ah yes that one I forgot to put that on the list as that was epic but not sure if as painful as the top three.

Losing to Paella in the AO 2009 was awful. Also RG in 2006, 2011.

2008 wasn't so bad because I knew Paella would moonball Federer off the court.

Magnus 12-04-2012 12:23 AM

The first one is obviously against Nadal in AO 2009. Fed played better, won more points, was leading in all of the sets he lost except for the 5th one. If Nadal was playing the same as he did only had Roddick's face on, Fed would have likely finished the match in 3. Even Nadal looked lost at the end of the 4th set, he was spent.

merwy 12-04-2012 12:23 AM

Well the Wimbledon loss was pretty bad I guess, but I didn't see the match live and at the time I really liked Federer but I got a bit tired of him winning everything, so I didn't mind that much that Nadal won his first Wimbledon.

The one that really ****ing hurt was the 2011 US Open loss to Djokovic. I was on vacation with my best friend and we were in the hotel room in the evening, when I suddenly remembered the US Open semi finals were that day. I turned on the TV and the 4th set was just ending. I saw the scoreline and was disappointed.. expecting Djokovic to finish Federer, since he won the last 2 sets. But then he got up 5-3! Wow, I did not see that coming! Federer was playing great and clearly better. When he got up 40-15 I was so happy and started explaining to my friend how unbelievably amazing this is, that Fed at this age is still beating Djokovic in 2011 mode (my friend doesn't watch tennis) and I was ecstatic myself. Then Djokovic hit that return winner, but for some reason it looked out by like half a meter on our crappy hotel tv. So I thought it was over, you know. Then I don't see them coming to net and I think: Oh is Djokovic challenging? Then I got what was really happening and I saw Djokovic doing that stupid thing to the crowd. (No really, at the time that seriously ****ed me off.. I had an uncomfortable feeling that it would throw Federer's game off). And well, for the remaining games I just sat their.. watching Federer lose.. thinking to myself: No, this can't be happening, Federer will regain control of this match, it's still possible for him to win.
And before you know it, the match is over. I felt pretty ******.

I also felt bad after this years WTF loss to Djokovic since I was pretty sure Fed would take the 2nd set. Disappointing to see him lose to Djokovic in these ridiculous manners, very unfitting for such a legend.

The Moonballer 12-04-2012 12:30 AM

The 2011 USO loss to Djokovic was pretty horrific but at least he lost to a deserving player and not to Cheatdal.

A great consolation was to see Piggy get smashed by Djokovic in the final, loved that

Sabratha 12-04-2012 12:30 AM

Federer vs Safin 2005 AO.

5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(6), 9-7.

After this loss the mental edge against fed was confirmed.

I'd take the Nalbandian match out because he was clearly hobbled, and should have lost in straight sets.

Here's my list:

1. vs. Del Potro US Open Final 2009
2. vs. Nadal Wimbledon Final 2008
3. vs. Djokovic US Open Semi-Final 2011
4. vs. Nadal Australian Open Final 2009
5. vs. Djokovic US Open Semi-Final 2010

Bobby Jr 12-04-2012 01:52 AM

The top two here should be the French Open final losses in 2006, 2007 and the next the 2009 Aussie Open and/or 2009 US Open - all of which, if won (and all other things being unchanged), would have seem him secure four majors in a row on each occasion. If it was both the 2009 matches he'd have the calendar slam.

The 5th match I'd change would be the 2011 French Open final. To beat Nadal there would mean (assuming the above) another career slam secured, a late-in-his-career win over Nadal on clay and make his slam winning years an unbroken run of 10 years (as of this year).

Heh. Not to rub it in, but this was a very entertaining post :)

His loss to Nadal at AUSTRALIAN OPEN is BY FAAAAR the toughest loss for me. Really, by a million miles. At that point I realized he really was weak against Rafa. At that point I also saw the possibility of Nadal surpassing Federer as the true best player. Nadal's injuries and Fed's return in 2009 turned that around and kind of saved Fed's legacy as the best of this era. But at that moment, damn that loss hurt.

Second's got to be Wimbledon 2008

FO 11 final hurt bad too because I believed he could do it.

Delpo 2009 USO

Then there are a ton of matches like RG 06 and 07, Safin or Nalby in 05, or some match prior to his first major.

Phoenix1983 12-04-2012 02:42 AM

1. Wimbledon final 2008 vs. Nadal
2. Aussie final 2009 vs. Nadal
3. US final 2009 vs. Del Potro
4. Aussie semi 2005 vs. Safin
5. Olympics final 2012 vs. Murray

The 2008 French wasn't painful as Fed knew he had no chance to win from the start.

augustobt 12-04-2012 05:22 AM

1 - AO '09.
Federer was destroying everyone, 2-0-0 in Delpo, clinched a 2-0 comeback against Berdych...

2 - Master's Cup '05
Damn Nalbandian.

3 - W '08
He almost did the impossible. Comeback in that match, saving championship point the way he did, and then lost the match in that forehand...

4 & 5 - USO '10 & '11
Come on. Two match points in both matches.

Cup8489 12-04-2012 05:38 AM

AO 2009
Wimbly 2008
USO 2009 (spent the majority of the match telling my then-girlfriend how great Fed was, and then he up and loses)
FO 2006 (such a great start, and couldve won the 4th set TB. So much fail on his part in that match)
FO 2011 (same thing, shouldve won both the first two sets, and did win the third)

sonicare 12-04-2012 05:44 AM

Surprised no one has listed Rome 2006. A match Roger should have won IMO.

that match IMO was very important. Would have been the first time Fed beat nadal on clay in a Best of 5 and it may have helped him sneak in a FO by beating Nadal just by the added belief it would have given him. I have always felt that Fed was good enough to beat Nadal atleast 1 out of the 5 times they played at the FO. A Rome victory in 06 might have been the mental edge he needed but alas, it was not to be.

Come on you had no expectation of fed winning that one despite Nadal putting his worst performance ever in a RG final. That one should not hurt but its seems like everyone is going with AUS 09.

Oh yes! And he lost 2 CP's, was 4-1 up in the fifth...
