"...the truth is that TV tennis is to live tennis pretty much as video porn is to the felt reality of human love...

Beauty is not the goal of competitive sports, but high-level sports are a prime venue for the expression of human beauty. The relation is roughly that of courage to war.

The human beauty we’re talking about here is beauty of a particular type; it might be called kinetic beauty. Its power and appeal are universal. It has nothing to do with sex or cultural norms. What it seems to have to do with, really, is human beings’ reconciliation with the fact of having a body.

Of course, in men’s sports no one ever talks about beauty or grace or the body. Men may profess their “love” of sports, but that love must always be cast and enacted in the symbology of war: elimination vs. advance, hierarchy of rank and standing, obsessive statistics, technical analysis, tribal and/or nationalist fervor, uniforms, mass noise, banners, chest-thumping, face-painting, etc. For reasons that are not well understood, war’s codes are safer for most of us than love’s. You too may find them so, in which case Spain’s mesomorphic and totally martial Rafael Nadal is the man’s man for you — he of the unsleeved biceps and Kabuki self-exhortations. Plus Nadal is also Federer’s nemesis and the big surprise of this year’s Wimbledon, since he’s a clay-court specialist and no one expected him to make it past the first few rounds here. Whereas Federer, through the semifinals, has provided no surprise or competitive drama at all. He’s outplayed each opponent so completely that the TV and print press are worried his matches are dull and can’t compete effectively with the nationalist fervor of the World Cup…

A top athlete’s beauty is next to impossible to describe directly. Or to evoke. Federer’s forehand is a great liquid whip, his backhand a one-hander that he can drive flat, load with topspin, or slice — the slice with such snap that the ball turns shapes in the air and skids on the grass to maybe ankle height. His serve has world-class pace and a degree of placement and variety no one else comes close to; the service motion is lithe and uneccentric, distinctive (on TV) only in a certain eel-like all-body snap at the moment of impact. His anticipation and court sense are otherworldly, and his footwork is the best in the game — as a child, he was also a soccer prodigy. All this is true, and yet none of it really explains anything or evokes the experience of watching this man play. Of witnessing, firsthand, the beauty and genius of his game. You more have to come at the aesthetic stuff obliquely, to talk around it, or — as Aquinas did with his own ineffable subject — to try to define it in terms of what it is not."

Tushy, I saw you seeking answers for some math puzzles the other day, so I'd like you to solve this one before you sign off for the apocalypse :

(find the missing number)

3 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 2 = †60†
1 + 7 + 2 + 1 + 0 = 102
4 + 1 + 7 + 5 + 6 = ?

I've read every word of his I could track down but Infinite Jest is still my favourite (other than his tennis reportage). I love that he was a tennis tragic and apparently a pretty good college player. Actually tennis has an impressive list of literary aficionados from Nabokov through Updike, Foster Wallace, Martin Amis, Margret Atwood, Paul Theroux, Lionel Shriver, Wes Anderson and so on. Clearly as with some of the subtle wordsmiths on TW the game inspires many who appreciate lyricism, poetry, pathos and nuance of the other beautiful game.

Iíll second the faster courts. Pay the guys who want to attack.

You should provide atleast 2 patterns followed by question for it to make sense lol :)

sbengte 12-19-2012 04:30 AM

power level 800 12-19-2012 04:33 AM

hmmm well if both the patterns had the first 4 digits only i would have said 41*7*12

18 is possible, leaving the 4th number and summing up the rest but it is not using the entire numbers , my guess 90 for the first two digits which is a bit more complex (a + b + c + d + e = for the first portion mod( b-c)*(a+d+e)) so only two sequences are not enough to break down for the rest of the portion and it asks for 2 more to break it down or the multiple choice should suffice lol, interesting one though

sbengte 12-19-2012 07:55 AM

No correct answers so far. Keep trying ;-)

How can he be the goat considering he only has 11 Slams and hasn't accumulated anywhere near as many weeks at #1 as Sampras and Federer? :-?

I could add one particular sequence, but it will give it away, so it is no fun :D

The sequence is valid even with just the first 4 digits , but the answer isn't right. This should be easy peasy now ;-)

3 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 60
1 + 7 + 2 + 1 = 102
4 + 1 + 7 + 5 = ?
