Novak Djokovic makes History
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic became the first man in the Open Era to win three successive Australian Open titles after rallying from behind to defeat No. 3 Andy Murray 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday night in Melbourne. Djokovic was presented with the trophy by Andre Agassi.
The Serbian captured his sixth Grand Slam championship. He won his first major title at the Australian Open in 2008 (d. Tsonga) and followed with titles at Melbourne Park in 2011 (d. Murray) and 2012 (d. Nadal) and at Wimbledon (d. Nadal) and the US Open (d. Nadal) in 2011. He is the third man in the Open Era to win four Australian Open titles, joining Agassi and Roger Federer. "Winning it three [times] in a row, it's incredible," said Djokovic. "It's very thrilling. I'm full of joy right now. It's going to give me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season, that's for sure." http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Ten...ic-Murray.aspx |

It's kind of funny. Djoko owns AO, Rafa owns RG, Fed owns Wimbledon and USO is now the only one up for grabs! (last 5 editions saw 5 different winners!)

fed owns wimbledon and us open. he is just old now. dont forget that. and if novak owns australia, lets no forget he has the same number of wins federer has. just to put things in perspective. |
He used to, sure. I'm talking about currently. Last time Fed won USO was 2008. That's not current, that's 5 years ago. So currently, USO is not dominated by 1 player (although Djoko is the one who's made the most finals: 3 consecutive in the last 5 years.)
|
you are right, but if you mean currently, i dont think federer owns wimbledon. he won there last year but lost the last 2, so...
australian open is owned by novak and roland garros is owned by rafa. (murray has made 3 finals in australia but lost all of them.., novak has made the last 3 finals in new york but only won 1) |
Murray is #3 at AO (because Nadal and Fed have won it while Murray hasn't despite his 3 finals). Actually he's #4 lol. Djoko 1, Nadal 2, Fed 3, Murray 4. Nadal is #2 at USO (1 final + 1 title). In the last 5 years, Fed has won 2 Wimbledon titles, may not seem much but better than anyone else still. Djoko and Nadal are both #2 with 1 title each.
|
then fed has to be 2# at australia, because he won in 2010, 3 years ago. so, tied with rafa (or 3# with rafa having the extra final, but less semis)
|
No, Fed is not tie with Rafa at AO because he only has 1 title (in the last 5 years). Rafa has 1 title + 1 final. Nadal is #2, Fed #3.
In terms of consistency though, Djoko and Murray have been the best: 3 finals each. |

Did as I predicted before the event and cemented himself as the greatest Australian Open player ever. Will likely only continue to add to his haul there and end up with 6 or 7, possibly breaking Emersons bogus all time record.

Ah shame on me forgetting the 2009 finalist  So Djoko #1 with 3 titles, Fed and Rafa #2 (1 title + 1 F). (talking about titles and finals here, not semis). Yes, in terms of consistency: Djoko and Murray have dominated the event. |
