The undisputed GOAT retires!! :(

30 grandslam singles titles, 11 grandslam doubles titles, 7 olympic gold medals, and undefeated for 465 straight singles matches.

She is the undisputed Greatest of all time, she is my fellow country woman, she is ESTHER VERGEER.

Yesterday she opened the Rotterdam tournament alongside That other active GOAT candidate. Today she Will present her biography and she Will announce That she played her final match at the paralympics in London.

Congratulations on an amazing career!

Undisputed Wheel-chair GOAT. No offense to anybody, but you can't compare wheel-chair tennis to legs tennis.

Lovely_Bone 02-11-2013 10:53 PM

Still sad to see her go though

Sid_Vicious 02-11-2013 10:59 PM

She is a legend. Good luck to her in the future.

bezs 02-11-2013 11:36 PM

Guess it was coming, incredible records.

sbengte 02-12-2013 02:25 AM

Legend indeed. Coincidentally, she and the the other active GOAT candidate were born just 21 days apart !

Couldn't even manage 500 in a row? Pffft, I know squash players with better records. Squash players! :p

A truly astounding set of records; I'm no expert on the subject, but surely she's the most dominant wheelchair athlete of all time, regardless of the sport?

MDL

Saw it coming considering she didn't participate in the Australian Open. Sad to see her go, but I guess if you win over 400 straight matches, you get a bit bored after winning so much lol.

Don't Let It Bounce 02-12-2013 03:21 AM

What a great career she has to look back on.

The usual GOAT discussions on these forums almost always feature someone pointing out that the greatness of any player may be measured only against the competition s/he actually faced (as opposed to, for example, speculating how prime Laver would do against prime Federer). If these posters – and there are lots of them – are right, then no able-bodied player of any era compares to Vergeer.

tennis_pro 02-12-2013 03:43 AM

Why is she retiring anyway?

sport gets boring after a whlie the travel it's just not worth it at a point ya know?

joeri888 02-12-2013 04:55 AM

Yes. I think she might be bored (she's been disabled sports person of the WORLD multiple times) and I think her recognizability can get her better paying jobs in the Netherlands than travelling the world. She'll be ambassador of this and that.

Fiji 02-12-2013 05:00 AM

What a legend.

estigma2001 02-12-2013 05:04 AM

wheels on fire!!

mariecon 02-12-2013 06:00 AM

She's an amazing athlete. She'll be missed, but not by her opponents I'm sure!

Esther helps open the tournament in Rotterdam this week...

Polaris 02-12-2013 06:07 AM

Sad to see her go. Esther was just ridiculously good at her sport over a huge length of time.

Hodgey20 02-12-2013 06:14 AM

Those records are crazy

courtking 02-12-2013 06:21 AM

why it's crazy?? it's like 10 guys/gals compete in the grandslam.. the record is meaningless .. no competition out there ..

Hodgey20 02-12-2013 06:31 AM

I dont care who you play 465 straight matches is ridiculously incredible
