Off Court Training for Juniors

I've read that when kids are young their nervous systems are somewhat "plastic"; that is, they have the capacity to greatly improve balance, coordination, agility, speed, etc...

I'd love to hear any thoughts on off court training for kids under 12 or so. Are there any specific drills you've employed? Do you think kids who undergo specific training in this regard (in moderate amounts) have a distinct advantage over kids who just play other sports?

I know TCF uses the Bosu, Bongo Board, Balance board, but I've also read that improving balance on unstable surfaces doesn't necessarily carry over to stable environments (it recruits the wrong muscles). TCF have you heard about this?

On the advice of a PT, I used a Bosu and balance board a number of years ago to rehab a severe ankle injury. The PT said the best use of balance training is injury rehab and prevention (when used regularly) as they work smaller, stabilizing muscles often missed when training large muscle groups. Not sure it can help much otherwise, but seems to have a valid place in training.

I have seen a lot of value in kettlebell work. It tends to be relatively light weight, higher volume, and promotes hip drive which is of huge importance in all tennis strokes. Make sure that you get an instructor to teach the movements before you start on a program though, incorrect movement patterns can be dangerous.
