hitting some volleys

was hitting with a teaching pro a couple of weeks ago. she had her camera set up to film for her coaching certification video and at the end she took some footage of my game as well

bh not bad...

fh - you are typical victim of the 'way out in front' teaching.... motion looks crowded and you have no room to extend to the target.

catch and push, that's how you volley..... just catch comfortably to your side for the fh volley... so you have room to push forward.

fh volley works fine for me. does pretty much what I want it to when I hit with nationally ranked juniors and such.

I play SV in doubles and approach the net 1-2 times a game in singles. hasn't held me back

I'm confused: are you posting for constructive criticism or just to show everyone your volleys? I think the second guy was just trying to help, idk...

Anyway, if I could pick one thing that stood out as a point of improvement, I would say you could work on the footwork and getting it more consistent. Obviously some shots are gonna force you into diff footwork, but I think overall more foot speed would prolly help. cone drills work well for that sorta thing

I've hit with the thejackal and played some doubles with him. The guy can play, and has very nice volleys.

During the doubles game his dad was serving to me in the deuce court and thejackal was at the net. His dad's serve did not have a lot pace on it. Once I tried to take a wide serve with a fh down the alley and I hit it pretty hard. He very nicely volleyed that ball into the ad court right behind Cheetah. On another point I rifled a 2hbh right at him from inside the baseline. Again he volleyed it for a winner. In both cases he not only got his racquet on the ball, it appeared to me that he put it where he wanted to put it.

just found it weird that luvforty commented about my fh volley. usually I can get a lot more stick on that side than on my bh volley. it's just interesting to see the discrepancy between how I see my own game and how other ppl may interpret it

rkelley: thanks for the kind words. was a fun doubles game (except when my dad went into "lob all the balls" mode). we ll have to do that again when I fly back to cali

Cheetah 03-13-2013 08:33 PM

nice to see you again.
you need to come back to san diego so that we can finish our US/Canada davis cup doubles tie. We finished at 5-5 as i recall.

Here's something you might want to try. A good tip I got years ago for the volley. Instead of just 'hitting' the volley try to get the feel of letting the ball push the racquet head back on contact. Keep the wrist firm but not tight and let the ball push the racquet head back.

Just try it. You'll see the improved feel and control when you do this.
You don't want a solid wall feeling for the volley. You want more of a 'pouchy' feel.

Your volleys look a lot like mine. Nothing outrageously wrong with them, but just don't really look like they are comfortable. I'm going to work on what's in Luv's link and Cheetah's advice.

Gee...that's how my fh volley looks like. Isn't this catch and push?

I was just about to make some inane comment about how long you stood around forcing us to wait.....
Then you started hitting volleys.
VERY GOOD. Especially the one backhand volley I saw.
Only thing, you can lengthen the followthru of your forhand volley so it's not a forced racket stoppage. Just a little. Your backswing is fine, shoulder turn fine, racket grip and angle just good, and you keep your eyes close to the ball by lowering your torso down to low volleys.

thejackal 03-14-2013 12:28 PM

thanks lee. not a fan of the standing around either. if the video wete on my account Id definitely cut out those parts

I only watched the first 2 mins or so.

Your fh looks awkward to me also. I think it's something to do with your wrist, i.e its position (leading way out in front of the racket) and its angle (in relation to your forearm). It almost looks as though you have the wrong grip.

Your backhand volley looked nice and smooth.
