oh yes, i was thinking of some holocaust movies, but I'll second you on this. I saw this movie and then Barefoot Gen. Both were really sad, painful in fact.

I could add Forrest Gump, Titanic, Sophie's Choice, Saving Private Ryan, the end of Green Mile, Hachi - a dog story ... Benjamin Button, some of the stuff in Sleepers, Passion of Christ was really sad and painful ... Ghost was definitely sad, ...

Just watched 'We Bought a Zoo' with the kids. :( Those Cameron Crowe movies really tug at my heart strings. :)

I once saw a sad movie as a kid. Can someone tell me the name. This thread really has me trying hard to recall. I asked my Dad but he he has Alzheimer's so can't help much.

There was a couple, one of them died and went up to heaven. They show heaven using some stars made of shiny paper like on Christmas trees. It was very simply done, no elaborate sets - probably the entire movie was shot in a room or house with that faked up heaven with shiny paper.

This was most probably late 70's, or at most very early 80's. I remember as we walked out of the theater a young lady behind us saying she cried after many years. This was not shown at the public theater, this was at the American Center (then called USIS) (which showed a lot of old movies) so the movie could have been made much much earlier that the 70's.

The name probably had 4 or 5 words in it. I believe the movie was color, but can't be sure.

When I mentioned Sophie's Choice I had not clicked on this link. I saw it as a kid, did you see it recently, or long back ?

i saw it a long time ago. totally forgot about the "selection" scene. streep's a great actress. hope she can live long and act in a lot more films.

Though it's a movie made primarily for children, the first few minutes of "Up" were touching. I'm referring to the scenes showing the old man's life up to the present (dating, falling in love, marriage, fertility struggles, losing his wife).

Not the saddest by any means, but it came to mind.

4 movies I've teared up in;

1) Forrest Gump
2) Marley and Me
3) Up
4) Band Of Brothers, though it's a mini-series as opposed to a movie, the last line of the final episode kills me.

The selection scene reminds me of another holocause movie scene, but i cannot recall the movie -- its a long time back -- in which a mother is hiding with her tiny baby (whom she has in her arms). The baby is crying and she accidentally smothers the baby to stifle the crying -- killing her.
