Nadal vs. Coria @ Roma 2005

Is it me or Nadal was playing better 8 years ago on clay ?
watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkOhsBWDQHY

by the way Coria's tennis was awesome

I also agree that nadal was a better clay player 8 years ago now than he is today. His style was pretty much unbeatable. The problem though is that this translated to extremely poor results off of clay, like his losses at the US Open to people like Youzhny, Blake, Ferrer, etc. As well as his lack of success at the AO up until 09. I definitely think he lost some of his clay prowess, however he more than made up for it in his achievements once he changed his style. Also he could never keep up playing like that forever, he would have retired by now.

MichaelNadal 04-29-2013 06:26 AM

He was the energizer bunny back then.

NatF 04-29-2013 06:28 AM

His defence and sheer speed back then was absolutely insane. You really had to work for your winners.

Coria was a beast, just a much more talented version of Ferrer. Shame what happened to his career, he could have been a really great player.

JRAJ1988 04-29-2013 08:37 AM

Coria should have won the French Open in 2004 but he choked and that was tough to see. Coria with confidence could have been up there with Federer, Djokovic and Nadal well a bonerfied top 5 player.

Relinquis 04-29-2013 08:52 AM

Coria was amazing. the guy had touch, speed and aggressiveness.

that choke at Roland Garros hurt him big time... also injuries.

he was a character also, remember him against Hewitt at the Davis Cup? http://youtu.be/PFKjT5D3F5w?t=1m53s

haha argentina vs. hewitt, epic

Maybe he didn't choke in 2004, and really did cramp. That was a full year later and he looked pretty good against Nadal.

This is why Gaudio's win against Nadal in 2005 was so impressive. Nadal was at his absolute best. He hasn't improved at all, the non clay courts have just gotten slower.

Here he is beating Nadal. Look at how his 1 handed topspin backhand has too much spin for Nadal's forehand! (although Nadal won this point)

NO! He could run down more balls then than now but otherwise Rafa of 2012 (still too early to talk about his 2013 form) was by far THE BEST anyone has ever played on any surface. Almost unbeatable. Especially, his offence has improved

Nadal's clay game is basically frustrating opponents with insane defense and that spinny fh. He can't do that anymore as he lacks the speed. No doubt, Nadal was a better player on clay before he started winning on HCs and grass.

That was the score when Gaudio beat Nadal in the 2005 Buenos Aires quarter finals.

Gaudio was completely insane. Scorelines like that weren't uncommon in his career at all!

You are watching that match on a wide-angle lens, so everyone looks like they're covering the court better (laterally at least) than they actually are.

Mikael 04-29-2013 11:55 AM

Surprised this match isn't mentioned more often in "best match of all time" discussions. Close to 40mns of HLs, most of it absolutely outstanding points. Amazing intensity from both players from the beginning to the end, + plenty of drama with the 5th set tiebreak. One of those rare performances where both players appear superhuman, both mentally and physically!

Le wow, that's a bold statement, to say nadal dkdnt improve or change his game at all, but the courts got slower which helped his game.

The vamos brigade will be gunning for you methinks

I hate videos like this. These overstretched highlight reels of old matches are one of the biggest reasons for inaccurate nostalgic recollections of players and their abilities in previous years. Neither the ball nor the players were moving as fast as this video makes it seem.

That said, it was a good match.

I saw it replied on sky sports during a rain break 3-4 years ago. It's one of the greatest matches in history.
