Slam Draw Trivia

inspired by recent thread ...

Guidelines: looking for most draw opponents who were slam champs, and total slams by those opponents. Example -

Sampras, 1994 Australian. En route to the title he defeated Kafelnikov (R64), Lendl (R16), and Courier (SF). These players won 2+8+4 = 14 slams. Sampras draw = 3 slammers, 14 slams. Yevgeny had no slams at the time, but we're giving him credit for his 2 career slams. All clear? Questions are for Open Era only.

1) Who is the only slam champ to defeat five (5) fellow slam champs en route to the title?

2) There is one other player who had 5 slam champs in his draw. He defeated four of them, but lost in the final to the fifth. Who was he?

3) Whose draw had opponents with the largest total of slams? This player is not the answer to questions (1) or (2).

4) Softball, that just came out of the research. Who is the only player to face Federer and Sampras in the same slam?

- Sampras met Rafter, Agassi, Safin then lost the final to Hewitt at the USO 2001. His opponents hold 14 slams together.

- Edberg defeated Krajicek, Lendl, Chang and Sampras to win the USO 1992. His opponents hold 24 slams together.

- Nadal defeated Djokovic and Federer to win RG. His opponents hold together 23 slams.

Del Potro beat Federer and Nadal. Djokovic beat Federer and Del Potro. USO 2009 and 2011 respectively.

In the 1976 US Open Connors defeated 4 'slammers' who had 19 slams between them.

In 1978 he repeated this feat but against 3 'slammers'.

2007 Roland Garros

Nadal def:

Del Potro (1 slam)
Hewitt (2 slams)
Moya (1 slam)
Djokovic (6 slams)
Federer (17 slams)

That makes a total of 27 slams, which is less than Del Potro winning USO09 but definitely falls into the 5 slam champs in the draw category...

Aura 07-19-2013 10:27 AM

It is based on the number of slams at the time of the defeat, no?

Well played, I was wondering who the "5-slam-winning-opponents" champion was.

I had to a lot of research to find out who the "beat 4-slam-champions-then-lost-to-a-fifth" guy was;

Vitas Gerulaitis, 1979 US Open

Edmondson (1st rd, 1 slam)
Smith (3rd rd, 2 slams)
Kriek (QF, 2 slams)
Tanner (SF, 1 slam)

Lost in final to McEnroe (7 slams)

No, total slams eventually won. Luis Horna gets credit for 17 slams at 2003 RG.

Is the answer to No 3 Del Potro at the 2009 US?

30 slams (Federer 17, Nadal 12, Ferrero 1)

Hops 07-19-2013 11:23 PM

Opponent's total slams

36 -
35 -
32 -
31 - Agassi, 2001 US Open
30 -

Ah OK, I thought the answer to No 3 had to be the winner of a slam...

Edit: Goran Ivanisevic at 1992 Wimbledon (played Lendl, Edberg, Sampras and Agassi)

36 - Goran, 1992 Wimbledon
35 - Berdych, 2010 Wimbledon
32 - Gonzalez, 2007 Aussie
31 - Agassi, 2001 US Open
30 - Murray, 2008 US Open
30 - Del Potro, 2009 US Open

To date, Berdych is the only player to face Fedalovic at the same slam.
