Steeb was a workman like player with solid groundies, no volleys and good looks. He was one of a few quite good, second players for Germany in the times of Boris and Stich, who seldom played on the same team. Others included Westphal (who died on HIV), Kühnen, Schwaier, Göllner and Jelen, who was the most talented touch player of the lot, but lacked athletic and mental strength.
