Firstly, I think West Ham fans (rightly, I think, considering their traditions) have a certain expectation of stylish and dynamic football (think of the one and only Bobby Moore, and Martin Peters, and Trevor Brooking, and Alan Devonshire, and Paulo DeCanio, and the younger Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, etc, etc.) This contrasts with the more functional game that Curbishley seems to get his teams to play. And secondly, basically, I simply don't think they ever took to him or warmed to him. Undoubtedly though, they are a bloody hard lot to please.
