They are #2 and #3 in the world. Fed had an off day. Nole took huge risks in the 5 and pulled the lucky one. It's normal. It happens. It is why they play the matches in the first place instead of just declaring the winner.
Nadal had the same experience last year. He won AO. His main rival won FO and Wimby. A hot young player beat him in the semis, and will beat his main rival in the final. Djokovic is winning the title the same way Del Potro did. )
In any case, Fed will be trying to win the USO next year. He is not retiring any time soon.
