Not sure abewt Air Canada, but a 12 pack rarely fits in the overhead bin unless it is empty. A 6 is perfect, and so is an not-so-full 9er.
When I travel, I use a 6pk for my sticks and my stuff for the trip. A garment bag holds my clothing and shoes, and sometimes you don't even have to check that - it fits in the little hanging closet by 1st class.
