But I agree with you, if we take their overall results in the Open Era, Gimeno was clearly superior, and his 1972 French title was still a great one, even if it was depleted, because he had to beat some strong players to win it (Stan Smith in particular).
Beating Stan Smith on clay wasn't that great a challenge. Smith was great on grass and carpet. He was much less effective on slower hard courts and clay.
