Regarding Robinson's .316, MLB lowered the pitching mound 5 inches beginning in 1969 because the pitcher's were becoming too dominant. Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968 was the last straw.
The old timer numbers are kind of a joke IMHO. It was a different game in many respects.
