Regarding Robinson's .316, MLB lowered the pitching mound 5 inches beginning in 1969 because the pitcher's were becoming too dominant. Bob Gibson's 1.12 ERA in 1968 was the last straw.
The old timer numbers are kind of a joke IMHO. It was a different game in many respects.
You can't hit what you can't see...another contributing factor to the lower averages was the big increase in night games in older stadiums with poor lighting.
