I think Federer probably considered retiring just after winning Wimbledon this year and would have if there was no Olympics immediately after. He missed his chance at the perfect retirement, after Murray slaughtered him at the Olympics.

So when Fed won Cincy(without dropping a set or a break) beating Djokovic in the final(handing out a bagel) that was a sure sign he HAD to retire!
