RHCP became the Aerosmith of Generation X. "Under the Bridge" is our "Dream On"; the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik was a cornerstone drunksexytime album during the grunge-era. Then they discovered a second stage career with melodic sing-alongs that's carried them through to this day.
I think most people would agree REM was never the same after Bill Berry left. Except for "Automatic for the People" (can't go wrong with the Nightswimming, Man on the Moon, Find the River ), I prefer the pre-Scott Litt era.
