Upright is definitely the better option. I find recumbent bikes to be extremely awkward and uncomfortable, especially when trying to get a good workout. You simply cannot get into a good rhythm unless you have your weight over the pedals. Recumbent is only good if you want to sit back and read a magazine while pretending to exercise.
