Clash is a really good example, and it also emphasizes that bands rarely lay out all of their cards on their debut album. People gave the Clash a lot of crap for Give Em Enough Rope when that came out, but looking back, it showed that they were more facets to the band than "White Riot. " Perhaps they overreached with Sandinista and went too far away from their strengths. In any case, the NME model of overhyping first albums can be destructive for the growth of bands. Most bands need at least 3 albums before they know what they are.
