As to the short side, if you mix it up and have the long side on the short side, then just weave the top cross with the short side and you are resynchronized, as that even makes it so the top and bottom cross strings as the tie off strings.
The old Gamma X-ST brake is not strong enough to hold the turntable in place. Supposedly the new design can do it though.
