Here's what you do: buy a set of string that is 40 feet.
Keep it. Bam, there you go. If you want to string two piece, cut it in half and keep one of the halves. Just pull off that amount from the reel and you're good to go. I have a half-set of Gosen OGSM 17 that I've been using for years.
My method: 1 piece - 8 head to throat measures and 9.5 widths measure at the longest points, then double the combined lengths for a 16x19 frame. The long way is to measure 16 mains and 19 crosses.
I don't get why you need to measure 40 feet exactly. Most of the time you'll have 5 to 6 feet of cutoff. Reels will produce 18-20 sets, 17 sets if you cut 40 at a time.
