I think the "ugly as sin" image in your memory was the forced scrambling on the other side of the net in reaction to that beautiful 2hbh. It's not ugly to take shots on the rise when you "pure" them every time. As I said, that ability was all in his superalitive footwork. He was a mirror image of Segura's 2hfh and many consider that stroke as close to perfect as anyone has ever hit.
