I mean i watched that match closely. If you look carefully, you will see that already in warmup Sampras was not ready and he was not himself. Soon thereafter he missed a slam dunk smash....and the pressure was on. I think he had a bad warmup. Federer did well to give him less than comfortable volleys in warmup....he missed a lot and had no rythm whatsoever. There was a lot of pressure and hype for this match....Sampras had everything to lose, and Federer nothing. If they were to play each other more regularly, I highly doubt Federer would have always had his way.
