People respond to the level of competition that they have at the time. You can't really compare the Fed at 25 in the current environment to what Fed would be like if he was 25 in the current environment. Fed could have upped his fitness level in response to the competitive environment - just as Murray upped his game with Lendl. Federer said in a post-match interview earlier last year that his girls were a bigger priority - that happens when you get older and have a family.
