Besides, in 2012 he was the only player to win 3 titles on 3 different surfaces (Indian Wells, Madrid, Wimbledon). At the same time, he thumped Djokovic and Murray back to back in that same Slam.

You can't look at it that way. For FEDERER, arguably the best player ever, settling for #2 or #3 is not good enough. When you have trouble winning five set matches due to fitness, that will not cut it for a player of that caliber.

For a guy like Ferrer? Absolutely. That guy could play until he's 40.

But for Federer, it is not good enough to be able to do awesome in 3-set tourneys... only to have problems in 5-set tourneys. The guy doesn't need tens of millions anymore. That is chump change. Not only that, but I'm sure he'll make pretty decent money even after he retires.
