Tonic is one of the highest quality gut strings under $40, although I might prefer the softness and feel of Pacific Classic. Personally, I use 16 or 16L because I need durability. I don't think Tonic comes in 17 gauge. I strung Tonic as a 1 piece because it's easy to string, but lower quality strings are better done as 2 piece jobs because you want to handle them as little as possible.
