Most of my game is volleying and, for me, I'd aforementioned opposite of my experience. If a guy hit a screaming shot I need to relax my grip on the handle or I'll volley it to the back fence based on his power alone.

Another net situation where a guy hits a soft shot I'll compensate by actually tightening my grip thereby generating more of my own power/using more of his to hit a volley. Volleying has a lot to do with how firmly you grip the handle and is varies constantly.
