It just prevents the turn table from rotating freely. This can be useful for tying knots and weaving, but the primary usage is for frames like the Prince O3 frames. You'll find out when you get one, but the side O ports don't hold the string in place, and with a giant gap, the frame will rotate around until the cross string is diagonal in the O-port. Obviously this is undesirable because the tension isn't accurate, and the string itself isn't lined up.
