from 1996. sounds like there's a pattern here.

Five days after getting bounced from the French Open, Jennifer Capriati's thundering right hand accidentally caught the left eye of a nightclub waitress.

According to police, Capriati got into an argument with her boyfriend late Sunday night at Bubba's Beach Club in Tampa, Fla. A punch intended for her boyfriend instead hit waitress Angela Larson, who was standing nearby.

Tampa police spokesman Steve Cole said Larson initially waived pressing charges but filed a battery complaint two days later.

``Now we will take a statement from the woman that's making the allegation and we will probably try to contact Jennifer Capriati to see if she wants to make a statement,'' Cole said yesterday.

Cole said the state attorney's office will determine whether battery charges will be filed against Capriati. Larson did not immediately return phone calls yesterday.

Linda Dozoretz, a representative for Capriati's agent, said they were unaware of the incident and had no comment.

Capriati, 20, rejoined the tennis circuit earlier this year after two stints in drug rehabilitation. She left the tour after the U.S. Open in 1993 because of burnout and was arrested in the spring of 1994 for marijuana possession.

Club owner Todd Clem, speaking from his radio studio Wednesday, confirmed the police account.

``Jennifer wanted to punch her boyfriend and I guess Angela was standing nearby,'' he said. ``And he ducked and she hit Angela in the left eye, and her tray of drinks went flying everywhere.''

Clem said Capriati was escorted from the club by security and held for police.
