I've never had this happen, but on many racquets the top cross is very close to the tip while the bottom cross is kind of far from the throat. That top cross has always looked kinda useless to me.
Travlerajm has experimented with omitting the outer mains and upper/bottom crosses. You can then string tighter and enjoy the advantages outlined in the first post of this thread: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=389303
I haven't tried it myself. The "Lendl setup" creates a similar effect.
