John openly stated that it wasn't exactly what he mean, and called it a "botched joke". He also regretted that his words were misinterpreted and made an apology.
If Toni Nadal felt that his words were misinterpreted, then why he doesn't come out and defend for himself? The reason is he knows exactly what he was saying, there was no misunderstanding otherwise he would speak up.
