Yeah, I also wonder if other sports draw more because of spectator interest. I mean, go to a HS basketball game and you have a big crowd, the band playing, local broadcast coverage, cheerleaders, etc as opposed to a tennis match where you're lucky to have a few parents, a coach, and a couple of teammates watching.

I played basketball and also ran track in HS and college. Two very different experiences. I loved the excitement and atmosphere of basketball games, but also loved the individual challenge of track, which is similar to tennis in that respect. Today, however, there are fewer multi-sport athletes and another sport might be more exciting.
