I was disappointed by Gasquet's upset today. Tsonga is clearly a very good upcoming player but he's still very inexperienced and too inconsistent to go much further in this tournament. Gasquet on the other hand had a golden opportunity to reach the semis (with Davidenko out).
Purely and simply, Gasquet needs a new coach! This guy has all the shots in the book and he can beat anyone if he puts it all together. The problem is two fold in my opinion: mental and physical. Don't get me wrong, he's a great athlete but he's still a bit short on stamina in 5 setters. Mentally, he's just not there. You can see it on his face, he doesn't have the confidence of Roger or Rafa. Once in a while he seems to want to fight and just rips his shots and play an amazing tennis. That's how he beat Roddick at Wimbledon last year, but how often can he do it? Gasquet needs a guy like Gilbert or Wilander to give him a good kick in the butt once in a while and show him how to fight. Deblicker is just not the right guy, he may be paid by the french fed to coach him but he better go and find his own coach. Reaching one or two more rounds in grand slams will more than make up for it in terms of money anyway. Just my 2 cents... |

A little pet peeve that I have with Gasquet is his return of serve, especially off of his backhand wing. He tends to retreat so far back to return it that he ends up sacrificing the point.

What Gasquet needs is to consistently reach the quarters and better of grand slams to become top 5. He also has to get his head straight.

Gascquet could be Agassi if he improved his return of serve. He seems so content to start the point with the idea that he will win a groundstroke contest. Unfortunately, for him, he cannot out-hit top ten guys.
