Default Sunglasses

Been looking at the sunglasses here on TW.

Just wondering, anyone here wear sunglasses when they play? Did you keep wearing them or did they bother you?

All my USTA matches are indoors and I mostly play in the evening, but on the weekend when I might play around noon or the afternoon, feels like my eyes take a beating. I usually wear a hat, but I'm still thinking sun glasses would be a good idea.

Been considering sunglasses since the tournament last year where sunglasses really seemed to help my opponent when he was serving into the sun.

I've been using Bolle sunglasses for years and absolutely love them.

I mostly wear them when playing matches where the sun gets in the players' eyes on one side of the court. Otherwise, I prefer not to wear glasses at all. My personnal preference though.

I know they don't get much unanimity over here though.

yup, i play in sunglasses alot, but i have presciption raybans and they help immensely with the serving into the sun thing. polarized lens are definately a bonus!

i play outdoors most (85%) of the time and the only time i ditch the shades is about 30-45 min. before sunset. on an overcast day i don't wear them obviously.

for my money, if you're gonna play outdoors, you need shades (and i'm not just saying that because my wife's an optometrist). cataracts suck!!!!

out of the ones you've picked, i would probably go with the first pair just because it specifically states that the lenses block 100% of uva and uvb whereas the other ones just say 100% uv protection. sometimes when companies say 100% uv protection, they are talking about one or the other (uva or uvb).

Outside, I always use both a visor and sunglasses. If not, the squinting and tearing up pretty much render me blind. I wear contacts, so that might make my eyes more sensitive as well.

I've never been able to understand how so many pros can play in the blinding sun without glasses and/or a hat!

Thanks to all for the replies. Think I'm going to pick up a pair. Just waiting for a reply from TW on fit/size.

Leaning toward the bolle as the teal lenses improve the contrast of the ball. They also come with darker lenses for general use.

Vandre - btw, the bolle website says the lenses exceed ANSI standards, which should include blocking both UVA and UVB light:

I have two pairs of Bolle sunglasses with interchangable lenses, and one pair with prescription lenses.

I found the competivision lenses to be a real disappointment. The teal shade made everything in the background washed out, and tennis felt less enjoyable in that dreary world. And the glasses so lightly tinted that they do not block out much of the sun when serving into the sun.

I was also disappointed by the lack of contrast from the grey lenses. If you are on the side of the court opposite the sun so that the balls coming to you are already dark, the grey lenses made the ball a dark blob against a dark background caused by the lenses darkening everything.

If you go online and use a google shopping search for polarized amber replacement lenses to pop into your parole or vigilante frames you can experience the best lenses in my opinion for tennis. The amber lens is high contrast and not so dark that the ball turns black in the shade. The polarization helps with glare. Like almost all lenses, they block UV light so your eyes are much less likely to develop cataracts if you keep up your passion for tennis over a lifetime.

I used to play in HS with prescription glasses and hated them due to sweat and slippage. I was so glad when I got contacts that I never thought to try and play with sun glasses.

I must say WOW. I play with Oakley Square Frame Polarized and I must say it makes a big difference. The lack of glare alone makes it worth while.

Depends on your uses. If you will be outside in any real hot and bright days get the ones you think look best under protection 3(lowest light transmission).

heres a description of fire iridium polarized:
Sport performance lens for extremely bright light. High-contrast glare-cutting design with a highly reflective Iridium® coating to enhance greens and reds.

i looked through them, and with polarized lenses it basically comes down to what color your comfortable seeing out of your view and what color you like best(black and ice give least distortion)

After extensive research and testing, I really like the VR28 iridium lenses for tennis. They have fantastic contrast.

Did you also try the VR28 black iridium polarized? If so, what swayed you to the VR28 iridium non-polarized?

The reason I opted for the non-polarized was because they cost so much.

Since they were quite an investment for sunglasses, they are my "all the time" sunglasses. With polarized sunglasses I wouldn't be able to read my phone, GPS, or other monitor displays.

Strictly for tennis, I could see how polarized could be better though.

I wear Bolle sunglasses as well. They are great, not bothersome or anything. They really do their job well
