For starters he was a former top 10 ATP pro, won 3 tour stops, All-American at Clemson, graduated magna cum laude, won Kalamazoo, was Assistant Coach at Florida International and the Head Coach at University of Miami. Good enough for me, but I'm sure that will get flamed.

Thats all fun stuff, but none of it has a thing to do with the mission. The mission is to identify kids with potential, work them out and interview them to try and figure out if they have that special it factor, and then develop them.

In baseball they have a scouting system and the best track record guys move up and become director of scouting and development. Other guys have proven themselves at great developmental coaches and move up to direct that.

Cal Ripken may have done great things, but the director of scouting and development was a star in his field and may have never played baseball past the lower levels. The 2 are many times not related. The guy with the best record in the actual sport has nothing to do with the person who may be best at finding and developing talent.

Rick Macci is proven at player development, Pat Mac is not. Pat Mac could own Macci on court but that is not relevant.

The problem is exactly what you posted. They don't hire based on actual track records in the specific area of each job. None of his extensive accomplishments show success with the responsibilities of his current position. His only player development at all was with 20 year old college students, nothing to do with his job now.

Too funny, unfortunately many coaches cannot teach much more than that on the serve.

gotta admit he has no charisma and no communication skills, I guess in order to be known you need to be a salesman with lots of charisma, you know who they are

I hadn't heard of Jay Berger until his name came up in another thread the other day with him talking about quickstart. I watched that and another video of him on youtube where he was presenting a drill (presumably at a coaches conference). In the drill he was working with a player to not 'back up' but to stay on top of the baseline to contact the ball and at one point told him not to take a drop step to get his back foot lined up with the bounce (which incidently led to the best shot the kid hit in the video).

Show this vid to any Spanish coach worth his salt and he'll laugh his *** off all the way to siesta! The whole Spanish system is based on getting the body behind the ball.

So, while I don't know who this guy is, if he has anything to do with the future of American tennis, I wouldn't be putting my mortgage on him producing any players.

cheers

Yes Ash, sadly the USTA has some top coaches who insist the kids stand their ground on the baseline. While the Spanish system favors giving ground when needed, setting up for the better stroke, and waiting for the right ball to attack.

Agreed, but he had one of the best backhands in the game at the time. I think he's one of two juniors to win KZOO and then go on to make it to the quarters of the US Open (Krickstein may have been the other).

Players that played in his time will tell you that no one worked harder at the game than Jay Berger.

that is correct , he was one of the hardest working player on the tour at that time, if he instilled only that on Bjorn, then he had some say in his development

Had dinner with his college coach last Friday. Jay Berger played #5 as a freshman, worked his *** off to moved up in the lineup to #3. Clemson got him on the cheap because he was not a top prospect. He won Kalamazoo after playing college tennis for a year.

Agreed on the Bjorn comment. Berger may not be the marketing genius like Nick B (nobody is), but his work ethic as a coach is known and the results indicate his team is doing something right.

USTA Boys won the gold ball in the 14s, 16s, & 18s National Clays this year. That's a solid effort.

USTA Boys won silver balls in the 14s and 16s at National Hard Courts this year. And I believe they took the bronze ball in the 16s too.

USTA girls side is...

Keys left Evert and is part of the USTA high performance program.

Townsend is having a great year and at 15, she will continue to improve.

Crawford has had some great wins this year including a win over Keys.

I thought Berger was the Head of Boy's and Malmquist or something was the women's coach.
