Watch the point starting around 22:56. Amazing, cat-like reflexes from Mac, ending in an around-the-netpost winner to win the point.

bad call but excellent match. and in those days it would have been difficult to make the right call without the oncourt replays they use these days

It was considered as one of the best WCT finals ever, right after the 1972 Rosewall vs Laver final.
In 1982 Lendl had won in 4 sets but Mc Enroe started to change things at the beginning of 1983, by approaching well into the middle, depriving Lendl for angles, and coming in on anything...

Yeah, Lendl was thumping Mac in 1982, but McEnroe turned it around in 83 and one of the big wins was the classic 83 WCT Final in Dallas which Mac win in 5 sets. It could have gone either way really and of course, that disputed shot out wide by McEnroe was a big talking point. Those guys hated losing to each other back then!

WCT had the honour of hosting some of the best indoor matches ever. The list is so huge...but, off my hhat here it goes:
1971/72 Rosewall vs Laver 1973: Smith b Ashe 1974: Newk b Borg 1975:Ashe b Borg 1979: Mac b Borg ( and Connors in the semis) 1980: Connors b Mac 1983: Mac b Lendl 1986:Jarryd b Becker 1987:Mecir b JMac 1988:Becker b Edberg in the early 70īs, guys like Okker,Riessen,Newcombe,Lutz played their best but not enough to beat a Rosewall or a Laver..

I saw that match live on TV back then. Amazing.
The last point was of course Lendl's, but the score in that tiebreaker was 0:6, so Lendl did not argue too much. He lost the match already.

My bad for not seeing that McEnroe hit the ball between the net and the post. Nonetheless, my point remains the same - the point was a great display of tennis I mean, it was a terrific point even if it didn't end with McEnroe winning with that shot.
In fact, I think the best shot is when Mac barely gets the overhead back, he lands moving backwards, Lendl rifles a forehand right at McEnroe and McEnrore, with those amazing hands, basically takes it right at his feet and to the side of him, yet blocks it back for a good shot. |
