Default Can Djokovic deny Federer the 286 wk record?

As of Monday, Federer will have 11075 points and Novak just 75 points less at 11000.

There are ATP Challenger events available from 80 points to 125 points - if Djokovic acts stubborn (or let's say if Pete pays him) he can play and easily win an 80 point Challenger tournament, he can climb back to #1 spot before Roger can break Sampras' 286 wk record.

Is this even a possibility in this limited timeframe?

I think Djokovic is much more concerned with the Olympics and the Summer hard courts than he is with regaining the #1 ranking. Also, if he won an 80 point event and overtook Fed, but screwed himself for the next two months, it's all but guaranteed that Federer would get #1 back, since Djokovic is defending 3500+ points between Toronto, Cincy and the US Open, and Fed's defending less than half of that.

Just my take, but I doubt Djokovic plays a challenger.

I don't know what the cut-off for late entries are, but I don't think Djokovic cares about Sampras' record at all, so why would he do it? He wants to rest and to practice and to get ready for the Olympics. There is absolutely no point in him wasting time and energy playing a challenger event to benefit the legacy of a different player.

It would be ridiculous if he did that.

No,

He next plays Olympics which is more than 2 weeks away and by that time record is broken, probably for last time.

Maybe he will play if Sampras get on his knee and beg him.

What does Djokovic have to gain from denying Federer's record? I think he is more concerned about his own performance at the big events than Federer's record at number 1. He may win something small as you say and take back the #1 ranking but at the cost of reducing his chances of winning the OG or US is silly.

Even if he did, it would take a week to reflect the points. In other words, Federer has tied Pete regardless of what Djokovic does. Lastly, Federer could play the same challenger event to prevent it from having any effect. Neither Djokovic nor Federer would ever do it anyhow.

just imagine viewing a Challenger draw next week, with low ranked familiar names like Kosakowski, Steve Johnson, Lester Cook and .... BOOM ... Novak Djokovic #1 seed! The tournament director would be like WTF!

It would be the biggest anti-climax in the history of tennis tournaments.

Even if Djoker were to win a challenger, it wouldn't reflect on his rankings since it isn't among his best 18 results.

Those 0 pointers for withdrawing from Beijing, Washington, and Shanghai really stand out now.

Also, the trump card - top 10 players cannot play Challenger events.

I don't even think he would be eligible.

But Nadal would be:

"An exception happens during the second week of a Grand Slam tournament, when top-100 players who have already lost in the Slam try to take a wild card entry into a Challenger tournament beginning that second week."

It says during the 2nd week, so Nadal would have had to have done it this week, not next week.
