When they start to wear down, compress too much or shift position so they're not wrapped evenly.
Whenever those happen, no real timescale.

That may not be an issue in the UK, but it's common here in Las Vegas. Overgrips help a lot.

Yes, extreme heat is never a huge issue in the UK lol
in fact a replacement grip can last 6 months here and the dunlop ones I get are £2.50 each, works out cheaper than a packet of overgrips each month. But that's just UK I guess.

Not to mention low humidity.
Here we also have to change our windshield wipers after every rain (about once a year).

Exactly.
Change to new grip, one you like the looks of, the feel, and the tackiness/size. Go it some tennis balls. That is how you hit with a new grip. Don't accept any less. |

I tend to switch raqs before the grips need replacing usually, unless I change out to a leather one to add weight or just 'cause. The last ones I remember needing to replace were my old Ncode 6.1's 5 yrs ago.

i change them whenever i get a new racket. most frames i play with are used, so the first thing i do when i get the racket is to slap a new grip on.
for those already in use its just based on wear and tear.

I use Head Hydrosorb Tour grip under an overgrip- I replace the replacement grip at the beginning of indoor season, then again when outdoor play begins- having a fresh grip feels great

Once (if the racket didn't come with a leather grip from the factory, I immediately replace it with a leather one) and then never again. I go through a lot of overgrip in a year though.
If you use a bare synthetic grip I'd recommend once a year, but if you have to do it often you should probably use an overgrip. |

^^^ This, I always use Wilson Pro Overgrips on top of leather grips so generally I don't need to change the grip.

I use Gamma Supreme overgrips. If I'm playing frequently, I'll wear through the top layer and the fabric underneath will give me good traction for a while. If I play only now and then, the dirt from my hands will mix with the tacky surface and make it feel gummy. I have some Dunlop Viper overgrips on order. I wonder if I'll be able to adjust.
