Default Backing up and transferring my iTunes library

I'd like to back up my iTunes library, which consists mostly of songs that I own on CD and that I transferred manually on iTunes. I'd eventually like to be able to transfer these files from the backup device to another computer (probably a PC laptop). Should I use an iPod (thinking of the new iPod classic, which has a 160 GB memory) or an external drive? Is the fact that most of my music wasn't purchased on iTunes a problem? What about iCloud as an alternative?

Here is a detailed walk through of how to transfer an iTunes library to an external hard drive. Putting them inside an iPod would just make it harder. Since the external hard drive is just a device with removable storage, you can copy and paste onto your computer that you want the library in.

Thanks Andyroo10567. Works also with songs that I didn't buy on iTunes?

Yes. Any music file can be transferred onto the iTunes library. ( Now if that wasn't allowed, that's just absurd! )

I know that in some instances, it's either not possible or more difficult with songs that weren't purchased with iTunes. I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere on an Apple help page about transferring music from an iPod to a computer.

If you have music not purchased from Apple, it is a big pain in the rear. I still need to move my songs to my new iPhone 5 but I dread it. I'm not a fan of iTunes in general. It is more like a complicated/bloated Windows product than an Apple product.

You don't need to worry about it until it happens. Just continue and it there shouldn't be a problem.
