He had a good career, may his life after tennis be as prosperous as his career.

Juan Ignacio Chela is the 8th player to retire this year following Fernando Gonzalez, Ivan Ljubicic, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, Rainer Schuettler, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Gisela Dulko.

Question marks remain over Robin Soderling, Mardy Fish and possibly Gael Monfils.

Has this year been a record for player retirements?

Monfils injures alot but he is still young. He has weak knees and ankles. Soderling has been out more than a year I think and Fish is getting to the point of no return at least in ATP tennis terms.

Does anyone rate his game highly? He seems to be just a fairly consistent baseliner with no major weapons, but I think he really did have a fairly decent career. I think he had several spats with Hewitt in the past if I remember correctly.

My first thread on TT regarded Chela's retirement. That was in early 2007. In terms of longevity, I rate this guy very highly.

I'll always remember Chela upsetting Hewitt at the AO, intense match.

Just two years ago he made a slam QF! That's a pretty sweet bookend to a solid career. Not everyone can have a Fed/Nadal career but I admire what Chela got done and good luck to him in the future.

very solid player without a lot of weapons. also quite consistent, he was still ranked 25 at the beginning of 2012 at age 32.

He was a fighter and had a long career as a pro. That is something few tennis players can do.
