Tennis / Club in NYC

I moved to Manhattan from SF 1 year ago. Can anyone recommend a place to play that is also good for hanging out and networking?

The cost of tennis here has been a shocker.

How much are you willing to spend? There are loads of indoor courts in NYC, but they are quite pricey, especially if you're not accustomed to NYC being overpriced.

You're best off joining a league to play weekly matches, and consider venturing to Queens clubs.

Thanks. Willing to dish out money to join. Need to start playing again and would like a place to meet new ambitious people here in nyc. I've seen some clubs here are WASP only. Coming from CA I find this disgusting.

Also any other clubs that are cool places to work out / hang out even if there is no tennis would be appreciated. My old club had an outdoor hotub with palm trees and up close views if the city skyline.

Try CityView in LIC, Queens or Sportime at Randall's Island.

Can you elaborate? Which clubs are you referring to? How do you know they are WASP only?

I lived and played in NYC for over 20 yrs and never heard of WASP only clubs in the city.......I would think you need to go to CT to find those

If you are in Manahttan you have a good number of places to play....Roosevelt Island Tennis Club has memberships, Sutton East has 8 red clay courts in a bubble on the east side, Yorkville and Vanderbilt are hard, Midtown Tennis has 6 indoor hartru. Most are pay as you go - you purchase court time by the hour (very steep from $85 to $150 the hr) or you buy a season pass that gets you time.....regulars usually take all the good slots early in the season. But all have regular drills and clinics, cardio, mixers, tourneys....etc.
Sutton East, Yorkville and Vanderbilt are all affiliated with each other as well and have same set up and programs.

You also have the clubs at NYU and Columbia that offer memberships as well.

The Racquet and Tennis Club on Park Ave in the 50's is an old-school, men only club which is extremely exclusionary.

There's also a very exclusive tennis club extremely on the far eastside in the high 40's or low 50's (somewhere south of Sutton East tennis) that is invite only and requires tennis whites, collared shirts, etc. Can't remember the name and, to be honest, I live fairly close to there and have never even seen the place, but know folks that have played there.

Forrest Hills is whites only (on grass courts) - and exudes a little bit of an attitude that this rule may apply not only to outfits.

Actually, I don't think the Racquet and Tennis Club excludes non-wasps but the reputation is that it does exclude non-whites.

My understanding is that club whose name I can't remember (on the very far east side in the 40's or low 50's) is more waspy.

In my limited experience, I've found Forest Hills Tennis to be relatively diverse.

Yep the price you pay for indoor tennis in the city...........you what maybe 30 indoor courts on the island - season pass runs from low 1,000s to almost $4,000 depending on slots.......crazy.

What you do is get a foursome and block 2 hrs and each lays out $50 give or take for dubs. At Sutton you get to play on indoor red clay...very nice.

Omg that's so expensive....
Just to give you an idea
Here in Casablanca, you can book very decent outdoor clay courts for 6$/hour.
And for ball kid you add 3$.
