Default Documentaries

Do you guys watch documentaries?
I mean quality documentaries made for theaters, with a real deep story and subject,
I actually found myself watching and downloading more documentaries than movies or even tv shows.
To give you an idea: Errol Morris's thin blue line or Mr Death, The Bridge, last train to home, the paradise lost series, bus 174, the imposter, exit through the gift shop, food inc, control room, etc

So if you guys do watch these and would like to share those you like and recommend some you're welcome to post here.

Youtube has a lot of good documentaries. Esp. historical. One of my favorites: Engineering an Empire: Rome.

I am a huge huge documentary fan. Huge. Just huge.

Off the top of my head:

Kings of pastry

Undefeated

The Joan Rivers documentary.

First Position.

Word Wars (national scrabble championships)

Jiro dreams if sushi.

I am currently watching The Lottery.

That ought to get you started.

Did you like Jiro dreams if sushi?

I just watched it. That guys work ethic is incredible, and still going at his age. I was very inspired but it just goes to show how much hard work and sacrifice it takes to be the best.

I also saw Last Train Home. A simple thing but it turns into a hell. My heart goes out.

Another I may recommend is The Cove. Very intense stuff but it turns out that in these following years, there may be a happy ending after all: Japanese consumption has declined dramatically and the industry is afloat only because of government subsidy.

This being talktennis, I feel it's obligatory to mention the tennis documentary Unstrung. I really enjoyed this documentary. Available on itunes, amazon, and netflix.

Here's the trailer:

Yes, very much.

I have now sworn off of supermarket sushi.

Thumbs up

Love documentaries... don't get to watch many lately. I will have to look out for some of them mentioned in this thread!

My all time favorite is Mad Hot Ballroom

.. there is a scene in that documentary where the teacher going through the process of telling some kids that they didn't make the team... pure true emotion.. moving

In The Shadow of The Moon
When We Left Earth
The Right Stuff (yeah yeah a movie but still...)

Rats in the Ranks (fly on the wall movie about suburban Sydney municipal politics)
Martin Scorcese's Blues series
America Revealed
Quizzers (about hardcore UK competitive quizzers)
The World At War - Laurence Olivier's narration still freaks me out
The Corporation

I really loved Pond Hockey, which is about the love of hockey, particularly amateur hockey played all day long outside.

Also, on hulu is a nice documentary following the fates of several junior players leading up to Kalamazoo.

Theres a pretty good one about this dude trying to become the world record holder in Donkley Kong.

Its like "King of Kong and a fistful of quarters" or something real similar.

Yeah; King of Kong sounds seriously unpromising, but it's really great...and it's on Youtube.

I enjoy documentaries, but in general, they are so heavily manipulated as to be essentially fiction.

As an example, Searching for Sugarman, which is overall a good movie, elides the crucial fact that he was big in Australia, and had been touring there when the film makes it seem he was just living in obscurity in Detroit; changes the whole narrative, but of course makes for a much better story.

^ saw it yesterday
Weird how they didnt fire that judge who was obviously connected to the majors
That conflict of interest was too much...

Also I hoped they'd focus more on the piracy concept and motivations, not only the trial

Personal documentaries are especially compelling....see "My Architect," a film about architect Louis Kahn, made by his son.
