I don't doubt that they hit the balls just as hard as today's top tennis players. However, because they used wood rackets, the balls did not come off the strings quite as fast. I have a tape of the 1981 US open final between Borg and McEnroe. It's like slow motion compared to the actions from today's top players.

Yeah, I've seen that as well. You should see '76 Connors-Borg US Open final. It makes that Borg-Mac match look like slow motion. Basically any Connors match had considerably more pace than many matches with his peers from that time. And any Mac match had considerably less. Mac was a strange player, he never hit the same shot twice & took the pace off the ball. many that played him hit the ball with less pace than they normally did, he took them out of their games.
