Default My Lord does Rios Suck!!!

Just watched the Paul Haarhuis/Rios match live at the Albert Hall and it was not far off disgraceful.
Rios was shameful in is effort levels. He just went through the motions for most of the match, and then would suddenly reel off 5 or 6 clean winners from nowhere and the shut down again.
In one service game he made 1 attempt at a serve return and even walked to the duece side from the ad side as Harrhuuis went through his service action.
Haarhuis was clearly unnerved by all this and gave him some cheap junk but thankfully pulled the match out.
I was really excited about seeing Rios play as i'd never had the chance before and was looking forward to seeing some of his exceptional shot making, and there were a few, but for all that talent you'd think he make an effort and FIND a way to at least compete. That is the mark of a great player, one who can have a c*@p day but still dig deep and find a way to compete.
Very very dissapointing.

I don't understand when you say "he don't want to be there." It is not like somebody is forcing him to play senior events. I thought he chose to play senior events because he missed competitive tennis?

Tennis is tennis if it's played on a tennis court with racquets and balls in accordance with the rules. I play tennis. Federer plays tennis. Tennis is played on the senior's tour. 4 year-olds can play tennis.....

Yeah but the joke is on Rios because he lost while playing on the senior tour.

What a joke.
A lot of the guys on the senior tour would give the current top pro's A LOT of problems.
It's just that they don't have anymore the fysical skills to do it 5 sets, 12 month's...

Just look at the tennis of Courier, Ivanisevic,... that's still quite impressive!

I disagree, he is clearly *choosing* to be there.

If he is choosing to be there, doesnt means that he feel really confortable and motivated playing there. He just want to play tennis, and he can not play tennis in the real circuit. But he knows that he is just 30 years old and is not big deal defeat the old man, but is a big shame when he lost.

Well that's up to you, but we live in a mostly free world, most people are not constrained by the opinions of their country-people...

thats true , i just want to share that is not a proud for us that he is the number one in the world in seniors tour, no body talk about that in news.

Tennis is tennis if it's played on a tennis court with racquets and balls in accordance with the rules. I play tennis. Federer plays tennis. Tennis is played on the senior's tour. 4 year-olds can play tennis

Im just talking about the circuit, the real competence for people like Marcelo Rios is there. He should not been playing in seniors tour , when he win is not a big deal for me like Marcelo Rios fans, just dont care for me (personal opinion)

If you can't give 100% of what you DO have, then you shouldn't commit to play the Seniors Tour or any tour. To not even attempt a service return is very poor sportsmanship. If I had been there it would have taken a platoon of Marines to keep me from competing for FREE. To think he was being paid for that show is disgusting. The OP is right.

Rios is not doing himself any favors by displaying such gross stupidity. He was one of the greatest shotmakers in the game and now he pulls this stunt?

True, but maybe he was just having a bad day? Maybe he was feeling very ill, and didn't want to bail (pull a 'Justine') for the sake of the fans? I don't know, but maybe.

I know I played a 2nd-final on Sat morning, against a guy who I beat soundly the last time we played. I felt odd, shaking a little, couldn't really run until we'd played 12 games. I reeled off the odd winner, and hit plenty of crap. Wanted to walk up to anyone who saw it and say "hey - that's not me out there!". Thankfully I still won, but it was terrible tennis for the first 12 games, until my body started feeling better.

Anyways - personally I think the Senior's tour will continue doing itself a massive disservice until it changes the age of admission to 35....

Of course it's real tennis. The guys on the senior's tour can crush the ball just as hard as anyone on the pro tour. It's just the speed and the endurance that has faded for them.

I don't have a problem with Rios being there, but if he starts to get an ego about his dominance, I think he's really confused. He's younger than Henman. He's much younger than Agassi and Sampras. As long as he keeps his trap shut and shows nothing but respect for the other guys, and talks about how he enjoys the senior's tour because he gets to play with players that he would have never had a chance to play with before, I'm fine with it.

If Rios gave 100%, he'd still be an ATP pro. Think about it.

If he gave 100% of what he had 10 years ago, yes. All I ask is that he give his best whatever his best is on the day he is playing. Not returning serve is 12 year old whiney boy crap. Please, someone kick him in the *** before he pulls that stunt again. Unforgiveable....

Orange, I've had plenty of those days, but we've all struggled on off days or days you have a cold. You think some guy playing for Stanford who has a cold and is scheduled to play a match against some top guy from, say, USC, is going to shuffle around the court and not return serve? If one of my college team mates had pulled that sort of stunt he would have gotten the crap beaten out of him in the locker room. Most of the college players, bless 'em, are more mature than Rios apparently.

Just my humble opinion of course. I'm sure I'm wrong.

I don't understand why so many of you are shocked by what Rios did. He did this all the time on the main tour. Truly one of the most gutless players ever to play the game. You should check out his match with Clavet at 1998 Wimbledon. World-class tank job. At the biggest event in the world. He pulled this stunt many, many times. Senior tennis won't change his true character. I see after losing he whined about the "fast surface." Again this was a trademark of his time on the main tour. If he didn't like the conditions(& conditions were a lot faster in the 90s) he had about a 50/50 chance of actually trying.

So many fans seem overly excited of the brief period where Rios actually tried(not coincidentally on slower surfaces) in the late 90s, that many seem to forget that guy tanked as many matches as anyone who's ever played the game.

Talent doesn't equal guts. Rios obviously has no guts, & very little character(I mean really, wouldn't you think most 30 year old pros would have a little bit more shame than to agree to play 40 year olds on a regular basis?)

Excellent points, as usual, Moose. (damn you! ) Well, I've seen Rios play about 20 times and only on t.v. and have a few memories of bad behavior, but I can't say I actually remember that many tanked matches. Having said that, I defer to your vastly superior experience and information (seriously).

Regardless, not trying for an athlete is like a Pope smoking dope, or a President lieing about war, or something-it should never happen.

He's human. Probably has a mental issue nobody knows about (Gaudio is another one). This may well be what really made him retire. He only damages himself. So, let him be.

I'm sorry, but the above is so so typical of modern society & celebrity. We like to use these people for what they're worth, and choose to ignore / despise / or disrespect them for their human flaws. Very sad, really.
