McEnroe-Crazy or Smart?

Is john mcenroe crazy or smart for the ways he acted during his pro tennis days.

i cant decide. besides mcenroe being an excellent tennis player i think he is smart for acting in such obscene ways. it gave him tons of publicity and now his acts are what people remember him for. on the other hand i think it was bad because throwing your racket and arguing with the umpire is disrespectful and bad for the game of tennis.

I voted smart for two reasons:

1. It threw his opponents off their rhythm.
2. It got him fired up and angry and he always played better when angry.


I do think he sometimes carried it too far and couldn't stop himself once he got going and that's when it would hurt him.

being disqualified from the AO while leading pernfors 2 sets to 1 wasn't that smart...
(or maybe it's part of a bigger strategy that i didn't get ?!)

If you read my whole post I did say he sometimes got carried away. Case in point being the default at the AO.
