Realative values of the Majors in the Open Era

I have done some counting on the number of times each major has been won by the player I consider to be the best in the world at that point in time.

In the men's game the figures are as follows

Australian - 14 times. 4 of these when I thought Borg was the best player in the world.

French - 12 times. Last time was 2001 with Gustavo Kuerten.

Wimbledon 19 times. Big period from 1985 to 1993 when the tournament was won by players whom I regarded as currently less than #1. Made up for since by Sampras and Federer. (I know Sampras won in 1993 but I didn't regard him as the #1 at that time.)

US Open - 22 times. The best player in the worlkd is almost guaranteed to perform well here.

I would therefoire conclude that in the men's game the US Open has been the best indicator of talent consistently over the years.

In the women's game the figures are slightly different.

Australian - 16 times. Dominated by Graf and Seles in the late 80s and early 90s giving it a good boost to it's Kudos.

French - 20 times. Currently benefitting from Justin Henin and in the late 1970s and up to the mid 1980s, Navratilova and Evert.

Wimbledon - 20 times. Benefitted by being won by Navratilova and Graff at their strongest.

US Open - 27 times What can I say, Evert, Navratilova, Graff, Seles. Always when they were at their peak.

Same conclusion as the Men's. US Open is probably the most consistent indicator of an outstanding player in the Open Era.

I like you logic, however, the AO was wasn't really played by many of the top players until until the mid to late eighty's.
