Default Question for ladies only

I have been playing 2 months now. I am now playing almost every day. I have 2 trnys planned in December. The time has come to buy a tennis outfit. Problem is..I'm still getting into shape after having a baby 8 months ago. I run 3 x a week and also do weights. Trying really hard and even doing the low carb thing.

Anyone else feel a bit self conscious in a little tennis outfit??

It seems like all the women at the club are these sticks wearing the latest fashion (complete with make up, jewlery, and hairspray- so much so that it never moves when they run or hit).

I'm from a soccer, basketball, baseball, football (yes for real -lol) background and not use to wearing a little skirt!

I feel really out of place and apprehensive about it. Any suggestions? I know how stupid an issue but for someone who didn't grow up playing tennis it is, unfortunately, bugging me.

Shorts.

Also, the running companies are making running skorts that are a little longer and less frou-frou ...

Just dress like a jock. The best players do that, anyway.

It is hard to find your "style" in tennis attire. There is a lot of "strumpet-ware," for sure. And the grandma set seems to have a lock on certain manufacturers.

I would recommend skirts of about 14 inch length. Black. Pair these with bright tops (red) or get a black top.

You can wear shorts, but I find this the least appealing look. The ball is in your pocket and your butt cheeks are TOTALLY OUT THERE.

You know what? Go to TW and order every single thing they have that might possibly work. Keep four things and send the rest back.

I did that to get myself started. Might I suggest this:

Just wear whatever feels comfortable and "works" for you. After 5+ years in the USTA, I've seen it all. I like to wear lots of different styles....depends on my mood.

(For a tough singles match, I like wear my black t-shirt with skulls on it. It scares the ladies...that's why I'm "luckyskulls!!")

I also wear the froo-froo dresses sometimes and shorts, too.

Mainly, I get a basic black Nike skirt. They last forever and I wash and dry on high heat because I'm lazy. Then, put any cool shirt I like with it. Some yoga tops look really different and everyone asks where I got it.

Yeah, if you wear a tennis skirt (as opposed to a skort with built-in compression shorts), you must wear bike shorts. Unless you're Brittany Spears.

That combo of bike short and appropriate length skirt will hide a lot of hoagies, if you will.

I find skorts confining. But by accident I bought two last year and I cut the shorts out of the skorts. And now I have some nice tennis skirts. Then I went and bought too black elastized heavy duty panties at Belks.

However, I might need that black t-shirt with skulls because I'll probably will be playing 3.0 singles this year. And when they see my gray hair, they won't be scared.

just wear shorts - i do, my partner does. Comfy and practical.

plus, i hate it when I have to use balls that some women has had up against her sweaty thigh because she is wearing a skirt with no pockets. YUCK. I think there should be a rule against it.

Heh, heh. I shove that ball right up my outer thigh as high as it will go. This even though some of my compression shorts have a ball pocket.

Hey, look on the bright side. At least you know exactly where that ball's been!!

Interestingly enough, it was a lady from Texas that showed me the shove the ball up your shorts trick. Forget messing with the stupid pockets. Gotta say, it's much, much faster. And if it grosses out the opponent, cool.

I used to hit this ladies circuit gym on my way home from tennis. So I was wearing tennis clothes. Eventually about three or four other ladies started to wear tennis clothes too. I asked if they had been playing tennis. Oh no. They just thought the tennis clothes looked cuter than the workout clothes.

:chortle:

CAK, if you can manage to have some of your pony tail sweat sling toward your opponent as you crush a ball that you just pulled from beneath your shorts, your opponent might just retire on the spot!

Thanks for replies!! I feel MUCH better now! LOL

So, I will try both shorts and a skirt with shorts underneathe and see how it goes.

Which type of shorts do I wear underneathe the skirt....is there a specific brand of bike shorts?

Wear shorts...some, like the Nike power short, have a built in compression short. No pockets to worry about.

Adidas makes good shorts, as well.

Other than that I wear skorts, with the built in compressions shorts...I don't have much problems with them.

The bottom line - wear what is comfortable and works for you.

You can buy a regular bike short (without the gel on the butt). Underarmour, Danskin, generic brand, or if you're made of money, Nike. The one I like is Barely Bolle, 'cause it rides up less than the others and costs only $15.
